Offspring testing reports

The assessment of offspring testing has been completed. Of the stallions approved in 2004, Arjen 417, Eibert 419 and Dries 421 have met the requirements for offspring testing and are retaining their breeding permits. Since sufficient numbers of offspring (> 40) were judged for each of these three stallions, they have earned a definitely approved status. The stud services of Beintse 418 are being postponed. Although his scores were inadequate for retaining his breeding permit, this status is provisional due to the low number of offspring tested for him as yet. His offspring will be judged again next year.

Of the stallions approved in 2003 and for which stud services were postponed last year, a final decision not to extend the breeding permit for Botte 414 was made. Ymte 407 will not regain his breeding permit either. The number of his offspring tested is inadequate, and not enough of his offspring are (yet) approved.

Feike 395 was definitely approved for North America. His approval in 2001 in the US was based in part on a limited performance test. During his offspring testing, his offspring were judged only on the basis of their exterior. Feike 395 was the last stallion to be approved according to these conditions. Since 2007, stallions in the US have to take a complete performance test and have thus the same status as stallions approved in the Netherlands.

Offspring testing is conducted during the stallion’s fifth or sixth breeding season. This testing consists of judging the exterior of the offspring that are three years old and older as well as a 7-week performance testing of 20 randomly selected offspring. The findings of offspring testing determine whether a stallion will retain his breeding permit. The findings of offspring testing can have one of the following consequences:

Findings are adequate and more than 40 offspring were tested: definitely approved.

Findings are adequate and fewer than 40 offspring were tested: provisionally approved.

Findings are inadequate and fewer than 40 offspring were tested: stallion’s stud services are postponed.

Findings are inadequate and more than 40 offspring were tested: breeding license not extended.
